BMW 523i E39 is the fourth generation of the whole range of BMW 5th series. Positioned as a premium class sedan, this 5-series served to supersede the position of the previous 5-series that uses code E34 (BMW 323i E34 – 1994).
BMW 523i E39 use the M52B25 engine with capacity of 1.6 litre. The sales are done only until 1997. Without any definite reason. Then in 2000, BMW 523i E39 position was replaced with 525i that use the better engine performances – its capacity is same but with different engine code and a better engine technology.

The problem caused due to engine block walls are coated by Nilkasil (Aluminum Nickel Silica) that will not stand the sulfur that is contained in the gasoline or oil, and often cause the piston ring leakage.
